Hyderabad headquartered Trinethra Super Retail had its roots in a retail initiative, which began in 1986, By the early part of the new millennium, it had emerged as southern India's fastest-growing grocery retail chain with 88 stores.

When True North acquired the chain in November 2004, organized retail in India was beginning to boom. It also acquired Fabmall Retail- a chain of grocery stores based in Bengaluru. Rapid expansion followed with the number of stores rising to 400.

True North supported Trinethra in bringing in a high-quality professional management team, revamping processes and systems to implement ERP, exploring new product categories like fresh fruits and vegetables as well as new formats like hypermarkets, and establishing highest levels of corporate governance. Inventory levels reduced by half, old stores were refurbished to align with the new identity, and gross margins rose significantly. Trinethra had a strong market position in South India.

By 2006, there was acquisition interest from strategic players and in December that year, True North sold the business to Aditya Birla Retail. The company rebranded Trinethra and integrated it into the More retail chain launched by the group in 2007.
